Health is one of the most fundamental human needs, yet it is often compromised by poverty, inequality, and injustice. Millions of people around the world lack access to quality and affordable healthcare, preventive services, and innovative solutions that can improve their well-being and longevity. How can we change this reality and ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to live a healthy life?
One powerful way is through impact investing: the practice of investing with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. Impact investing can unlock capital for improved health outcomes and equity, filling the gaps left by traditional funding sources and creating incentives for scalable and sustainable solutions.
In May 2024, CapShift, in partnership with Multiplier Advisors and with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, published a report titled A Healthy Future: Putting Dollars to Work for Health Outcomes and Equity.1 The report mapped out over 370 investable opportunities outlining three distinct areas for investment, 1) cutting-edge innovation, 2) direct care provision, and 3) the prevention of negative health outcomes through addressing social determinants of health.
One family office that works with CapShift says, “We aim to invest in areas where traditional funding falls short, especially when it comes to providing quality healthcare and health innovations to low-income and underrepresented communities. These populations often face significant barriers to accessing the care they need, leading to stark disparities in health outcomes. By stepping in where philanthropy and commercial investments don’t fully reach, we’re working to bridge this gap and demonstrate that investing in these critical areas not only makes a difference but also makes good business sense.”2
Collectively CapShift clients have treated more than 20.5 million patients in 2023, more than the population of New York state.3 They have vaccinated 305 million patients, including 5.5 million children, provided affordable healthcare to 312,000 women and 153,500 patients of color, and made breakthroughs in cancer research, mental health, RNA technology, toxicity reduction, and FemTech.4
These are not just impressive numbers, but real lives touched and progress fueled. These are examples of how impact investing can create a healthier future for all, by supporting solutions that address the root causes and systemic barriers that affect health outcomes and equity. By investing in health, we are not only saving and improving lives, but also building a more resilient and inclusive society.
If you are interested in learning more about how you can use your capital to advance health outcomes and equity, we invite you to explore the report. We believe that together, we can create a healthier future for all.
